A raping hare, a granny rabbit and a bear

2nd voussoir western arch south face.

Five arch-stones on the south-western arch, by the riverbank, seem to tell folk-tales but they are not all friendly. At the apex of the second stone a hare with an enormous phallus knocks a milkmaid off a stool. Or maybe it is Little Boy Blue.

The hare is running, ears flying behind. In his hand, stretched behind his back, he is holding a shape like a butter paddle. His erect penis has a face. In the angle between the milkmaid’s boot and flexed leg is a milking stool. The figure’s eyes are wide and the mouth agape. A cat is held on her lap. A cow at the right shoulder witnesses the rape. The motif of the hare with the phallus is found often in the carvings.

At the base of the stone, a long-eared creature sits in a chair. She seems to be a granny rabbit. Carved into her paw is the face of a kitten or child. She is nose to nose with a bear that is standing in front of her; his foot can be seen below her knee. His hand is tickling her tummy but maybe he is pushing her backwards. Behind the chair is a round visage with a long straight sharp nose and big eyes. the same face is seen between the legs of the top dancing cat two stones removed.
